PSU Poultry Science Club Wins National Award
By Donna Abdullah, PSU Ag Sci News UNIVERSITY PARK -- For the third consecutive year, Penn State's Poultry Science Club was named national Club of the Year at the U.S. Poultry and Egg Association's 2008 International Poultry Exposition, held recently in Atlanta, Ga. The club also won Scrapbook of the Year for the ninth consecutive year, and a member of the club finished in second place for Student of the Year. The showing followed the Poultry Science Club's impressive performance in 2007, when it won all three categories in the exposition's College Student Program awards. The expo is the world's largest trade show for the poultry and egg industry, drawing more than 20,000 people from more than 100 countries to see the latest products, services and technology. In addition to sponsoring the awards competition among 30 university poultry science clubs, the College Student Program gives undergraduate students an opportunity to interview for employment with more than 60 companies. The Penn State chapter won the Best Scrapbook award for its collection of photos and text showing all activities the club has participated in over the year. "It's a way to display what we have accomplished and allows us to share our club activities at the expo in Atlanta, at college fairs and with new club members," explains club member Tami Topper, who finished second for Student of the Year. "I didn't expect to do that well but I was honored to receive this award," Topper says. "I have worked and interned for various poultry companies and worked with birds as a hobby. Poultry Science Club activities provide opportunities to get experience in the industry and to have fun. Our advisors have been a great help also." President Samantha Tartaglino attributes the club's continuing success to the member's strong dedication. "Our strategy is just to stay active," she says. "We have social events to unite the club, and the members tend to become very close. Once you have a close connection, you are willing to work hard together not only to have fun, but to learn something and help the industry and community." This family-like bond is what helps the club continue their achievement throughout the school year. "Most members stayed portions of their Thanksgiving break just to process and sell turkeys for the club. They know it is our biggest fundraiser of the year," says Tartaglino. "These members worked a large portion of the weekend while peers and friends were at home." So far this school year, club members also have volunteered at the PennAg Industries food booth at the Pennsylvania Farm Show, made Easter egg baskets for a local food bank and raised more than $1,200 for Heifer International through a silent auction held at their annual club banquet.
