Penn State Cooperative Extension to hold Cooking for Crowds Workshop
LANCASTER
-- Non-profit, volunteer-run groups that prepare food to be served or sold to the public must be sure that the food is safe and of high quality. Food that is not prepared safely may lead to a foodborne illness outbreak. Foodborne illness can cause serious illness or even death for some individuals. In addition to personal suffering, foodborne illness can lead to expensive medical bills, lawsuits, and loss of good reputation and business.

To help organizations provide safe food, Penn State Cooperative Extension is offering a workshop, “Cooking for Crowds: A Volunteer’s Guide to Safe Food Handling.” Participants in this workshop will learn up-to-date methods for safely handling and preparing food for large groups. The workshop is appropriate for non-profit food providers such as churches, fire companies, schools, and civic groups. Penn State encourages persons with disabilities to participate in its programs and activities. If you anticipate needing any type of accommodation or have questions about the physical access provided, please contact Nancy Wiker at 717-394-6851 in advance of your participation or visit.

The next Cooking for Crowds workshop will be held on April 16, 2008 at the Farm and Home Center in Lancaster from 6:00 – 9:00 p.m. The cost of the workshop is $8.00 per person and includes a bi-metallic stemmed dial thermometer, instruction, handouts and posters. The manual is an additional $12.00 (one recommended per organization as a reference). Persons interested in attending this workshop should call Lancaster County Cooperative Extension at 717-394-6851 for a brochure. Pre-registration is requested.
