Red Meat Production Down in March
HARRISBURG -- Commercial red meat production, dressed weight basis, in Pennsylvania during March 2008 totaled 105.2 million pounds, down 5 percent from March 2007, according to the Pennsylvania Field Office of USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service. Beef production, at 97.6 million pounds live weight, was up 1,289 pounds from March 2007. Total head slaughtered was 77,000, down 200 head from 2007. Live weight averaged 1,278 pounds, up 22 pounds from last year. Veal production was 5.3 million pounds live weight, down 17 percent from last year. Calf slaughter of 13,400 head was down 20 percent from last year. Average live weight increased 13 pounds to 399 pounds. Pork production was 60.6 million pounds live weight, down 9 percent from last year. Total head slaughtered was 235,500, down 11 percent from March 2007. Average live weight is up 5 pounds from last year, at 258 pounds. Lamb and mutton production during March 2008 was 486,000 pounds live weight, down 2 percent. The number slaughtered was 5,700, up 4 percent. Average live weight decreased 6 pounds to 85 pounds. Nationally, commercial red meat production, dressed weight basis, in March 2008 totaled 4.09 billion pounds, up 2 percent from the 4.01 billion pounds produced in March 2007. Beef production, at 2.10 billion pounds, was 1 percent below the previous year. Cattle totaled 2.73 million head, down 2 percent from March 2007. The average live weight was up 16 pounds from the previous year, at 1,276 pounds. Veal production totaled 11.2 million pounds, 17 percent below March a year ago. The average live weight was down 48 pounds from last year, at 273 pounds. Pork production totaled 1.96 billion pounds, up 5 percent from the previous year. Lamb and mutton production, at 16.0 million pounds, was down 18 percent from March 2007. The average live weight was 139 pounds, down 1 pound from March a year ago. January-March red meat production was 12.5 billion pounds, up 6 percent from 2007. Accumulated beef production was up 2 percent from last year, veal was down 16 percent, pork was up 12 percent from last year, and lamb and mutton production was down 7 percent. |
