Food Safety Certification and Recertification Training set for Penn State Cooperative Extension
CARLISLE -- Each year in the United States there are an estimated 76 million cases of food-borne illnesses that result in an estimated 5,200 deaths. This mishandling of food causes about 95% of all foodborne illnesses. These statistics justify the concern that has arisen throughout our society over the safety of food. Penn State Cooperative Extension Cumberland County is offering a course in Food Safety Certification on Monday, May 5, from 8:30 AM to 5:30 PM. This format requires the student to complete eight hours of at-home study after attending 8 hours of classroom training. The course is designed to train food service managers, chefs, caterers, cooks, health officials, and food processors. This nationally recognized certification demonstrates to the public, employees and co-workers a commitment to provide safe food. Safe food handling practices protect customers, help increase profitability, reduce liability, maintain patronage and enhance the competitive position of the business. Participants will acquire the skills and knowledge needed to impose safety precautions and the sanitation of food handling, through informative and dynamic lessons. Developed by the National Restaurant Association Education Foundation, the ServSafe® food safety program is accepted by more federal, state and local jurisdictions than any other food safety program. The Food Safety Certification Training fulfills Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture requirements for the Food Employee Certification Act with topics that ensure safety in food handling. Through the eight hour at-home study format, participants are directed through topics such as contamination and foodborne illness through the Sanitation Challenge, storage, preparation, serving and sanitation management, food regulations and standards. The National Restaurant Association will certify participants who complete the ServSafe® course and pass the exam in food safety and sanitation. The exam is scheduled for Tuesday, May 13, from 8:30 until 11:30 AM at Penn State Cooperative Extension Cumberland County. Penn State Cooperative Extension is a part of The Pennsylvania State University. Penn State is committed to affirmative action, equal opportunity and the diversity of its work force. Recertification in food safety and sanitation is required every five years after the initial certification. Requirements must be met before the expiration date on the certificate. The ServSafe® course may be taken for recertification for the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture Food Employee Certification. Participants who are recertifying must provide proof of the unexpired PDA Food Employee Certification certificate prior to the first day of class. Registration fee covers the cost of the ServSafe® course book and instructional materials.
