Manure Haulers: Earn Credit at Field Day
UNIVERSITY PARK The first Manure Haulers Spill Response Field Day will offer Manure Haulers and Brokers the opportunity to earn 4.5 continuing education credits toward their certification. Sponsored by The Pennsylvania State University and Penn Ag Industries, the field day is being held Tuesday, August 5 at Lehman Ag Service, 300 Douts Hill Road, Holtwood, Lancaster County, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

A spill response demonstration will provide an actual clean-up execution following a controlled manure tank roll-over.

Robb Meinen, Penn State Senior Extension Associate, said, “This is an outstanding opportunity for manure haulers to gain some of the educational credits they need for their certification while staying current regulatory issues.”

This hands-on workshop will offer a thorough review of safety issues, including safe equipment management, safe operational procedures, a demonstration of containment measures in response to excess manure flow, first response demonstrations for accidents involving human injury and response procedures to manure spills.

The day will also include a discussion of biosecurity and pest nuisance with an emphasis on poultry litter as well as a review of the most current regulations.

Members of Penn Ag’s Manure/Hauler Applicators Council will provide insights on risks and best management practices on safety of equipment and personnel and spill prevention.

Registration fee is $25, including lunch. Reduced registration fees are offered to: Act 49 Certified Hauler/Broker ($15) and Act 49 Certified and Penn Ag Member – free. Registration is requested. Call Amy Bradford, 717-651-5920 for more information.
