to Conduct Cattle Inventory HARRISBURG — The Pennsylvania Field Office of the National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS) will be surveying approximately 1600 cattle farmers for its largest cattle survey of the year beginning December 29th and ending on January 14th. This will give the most accurate picture of the cattle situation for the entire year. Estimates will include the total number of cattle and calves as of January 1, 2009, as well as the total number of heifers, steers, milk cows, and beef cows. Pennsylvania farmers had 1,610,000 cattle and calves on hand on January 1, 2008, up 10,000 head from the January 1, 2007 level, according to the Pennsylvania field office of USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS). The Keystone State's calf crop for 2007 was 630,000 up 10,000 head from one year ago. All cows that have calved, at 710,000, was up 10,000 head from last year. Milk cow inventory, at 552,000, is up 2,000 head from January 1, 2007. Beef cows totaled 158,000, up 8,000 head from last year's beef cow inventory. Milk cow replacement heifers 500 pounds and over, at 275,000, is up 5,000 head from last year's number. Beef cow replacement heifers, at 40,000, remained unchanged from last year. Other heifers 500 pounds and over, at 60,000, was down 5,000 head from January 1, 2007. Steers in the same weight category, at 160,000, remained steady from last year’s level. Bulls, at 25,000, were the same as January 1, 2007. All calves under 500 pounds, at 340,000, remained steady from last year. In late December and early January, Pennsylvania cattle operators will be contacted by an enumerator either by telephone or personal interview. As with all surveys conducted by NASS, by federal law, survey data is kept confidential. Names, addresses, and information about individual operations are considered private information and are exempt from disclosure under the Freedom of Information Act. Data on individual operations cannot be released to the public or to any other local, state, or national government agency under any circumstances.
