The Wine Making Technique
The wine making technique has increase its popularity around the world. Winemaking also known as vinification is the process followed for the production of wine. The science of wine and vinification is known as Oenology.
Oenology is the oldest wine making operation discovered in Georgia and estimated to be eight thousand years old. Oenology studies all the aspects of vinification and wine. An expert on this field is known as an Oenologist. The majority of wine is made from grapes, but it can also be made from other fruits. An example of a wine that is not made from grapes is called Mead. Mead is a type of wine made with Honey as it primary ingredient and also water.
Wine making is divided in two categories which are the following: 1- Still wine production without carbonation and 2- Sparkling wine production with carbonation. The type of the wine grapes determines the quality of the wine more than any other factor involved. Grapes are usually harvested from a vineyard on early September to the beginning of November in the North hemisphere and in the South hemisphere from the middle of February until early March. The quality of the grape is known to be affected by the weather on its growing season, acidity, soil minerals, pruning method and time of harvest.
A winemaker, also known as vintner is the person involved in the process of making wine. They usually work for a wine company or a winery. A vintner main responsibilities are the following: 1- Cooperate with Viticulturists, 2- Monitored the maturity of the grapes, 3- Crush and press grapes, 4- Monitored the juice and fermentation of grape material, 5- Filter wine for remaining solids, 6- Wine tasting for quality, 7- Prepare the plan for bottling the wine when its done, etc. The red wine process the stems are usually removed fermentation because the stems have high tannin content. White wine is processed without crushing and transferred to directly to the press. This specific process is to avoid any tannin from the grape seeds or skins.
